The Scapa distillery was founded in 1885 on the overhang of a sheltered bay in Orkney. During the First World War, it served as a base for the Royal Navy... and it is perhaps the most famous distillery for wreck divers, as 52 ships were deliberately sunk in the bay. For this 10-year-old, we have a whisky with the soul of Orkney, aged in American oak casks with notes of exotic fruits and spices.
Tasting notes from the distillery: On the nose, pineapple and mango ice cream lead to notes of crème brûlée, honey pancakes and cinnamon brioche with a hint of citrus peel. On the palate, notes of stewed apples with spices combine with vanilla custard, a touch of banana, a light woodiness and milk chocolate.
